What Makes a Good Researcher

Insight, framing, pitching, and interest: a loop, not a checklist

This question probably has a few standard answers: resilience under pressure, strong networking and the knack for managing upward, creativity, persistence. They are all true, and all too big, so big that you have no idea where to start practicing. This piece tries to sidestep them and offer a few smaller angles on what makes a good researcher.

Systematic Knowledge, Then Insight 🍅

Before you can do research on something, you have to see the whole field first. Reading papers is the most ordinary way in, but there is more craft to it than it looks. Given the same papers, one person is chasing whatever is trending this week; another stands far enough back, and looks closely enough, to slowly make out the shape of the entire field. The first walks away with talking points; the second accumulates a map.

And the payoff from that accumulation is more hidden than you would expect. We are used to calling insight, the knack for seeing at a glance what matters, a matter of talent. I have come to think it is mostly a byproduct of coverage.

Someone who has gone through a field systematically catches an anomaly the way a veteran mechanic hears an engine: one listen and he knows something is off. The number that sits a little wrong in a results table, the assumption everyone inherits but nobody has tested, these are the raw material of insight, and only the person carrying a map can see them. A newcomer on their third paper sees nothing amiss, not because they are less clever, but because when everything is new, nothing looks strange. The strange exists only relative to the normal, and what the normal looks like is exactly what wide reading builds.

So: read widely, and draw your own map. Someone else’s survey is, in the end, someone else’s map; it saves you effort, but what it saves is precisely the labor that would have produced your own insight.

Insight is not the opposite of systematic knowledge. It is the interest that systematic knowledge earns.

Framing the Question Is Most of the Work 🍅

Once you have a map, the next step is to mark on it the one well you are going to drill. Where does the line between studying and researching fall? I think it runs from this direction is interesting to a specific question you can actually sit down and answer.

This step takes up most of the work because a well-framed question has to satisfy several conditions that pull against each other at once:

  • Falsifiable. Before you start, you can already say what evidence would settle it one way or the other.
  • Right-sized. Broad enough that the answer matters to someone, narrow enough that a finite set of experiments can reach it.
  • Carries its own yardstick. If you can’t say how you would measure success, what you are holding is still a topic, not a question.

Research that gets stuck is rarely stuck on the solution; most of the time the question was never really framed. The symptoms are textbook: the work starts to drift, every experiment is interesting on its own, and together they add up to nothing, because there is no question for the results to accumulate against. The more experiments you run, the blurrier the direction gets; diligence is no help here, it only makes the drift faster. One thing that helps is to write the question down before you start, one sentence, with a measurable outcome. If you can’t write that sentence, that is the problem; writing it is itself research’s first output.

Be Able to Sell It 🍅

Once the question is answered, there is one more thing that tends to get treated as research’s extracurricular chore: telling other people about it. Next to the research itself, pitching sounds like the socializing you do after the real work is done. I now think it is part of the real work, and an important part.

The reason: saying it clearly is thinking it through clearly, and selling it is making it usable.

Start with the first half. How clearly you can describe an idea depends less on eloquence than on clarity of thought. If you can land a precise analogy, it is because you actually dug down and saw that hidden resemblance, which takes both persistence and a sensitive feel for things. So whether you can lay it out cleanly in a short window is not, to my mind, a question of expression; it is a question of understanding. The parts you can’t explain are usually the parts you haven’t yet thought through.

Now the second half. An idea that can’t get into other people’s heads barely exists. Research is social, and so is the ground it applies to. Results have to pass reviewers, attract collaborators, find users, and buy the next round of resources. Failing to sell it is not always because the world lacks taste; it can also be that the idea really hasn’t been polished into a shape anyone can use.

So pitching is a crucial link: it is a debugger for your own understanding. Try compressing months of work into two honest minutes, and it forces you to answer one question: across the whole project, which claim is actually load-bearing? If you can’t find it, it may be because the important part was never built up in the first place.

Interest 🍅

The first three belong to the domain of craft. The last is interest: you have to genuinely care about the thing.

The daily life of research is mostly made of failure: experiments that won’t run, papers that come back rejected, frameworks torn down and rebuilt. In other lines of work failure is an accident; in research it is the schedule. If the subject itself bores you, no amount of discipline can hold up against that kind of attrition.

It is worth separating two things here: excitement and interest. Excitement is the racing heart on the day you start; interest is what’s left after the third failed attempt. After some years in this line of work, I find myself wanting to talk everyone without real interest into leaving. If the only thing that carries you through the hard journey is the flowers and wine waiting at the finish, the trip is far too bitter. But if you love the process, the whole way there is a happy sprint. The difference is enormous. When you do something merely arduous, the reward comes only with the result. But when you do something you love, the process is itself the reward.
